What are Ignition Transformers?

Ignition transformers

by | Sep 27, 2023

In the world of industrial combustion, ignition transformers play a vital role in igniting the optimal mixture of fuel and air. By delivering a powerful spark to a specific lighting point through an ignition electrode, these transformers ensure robust and reliable operation.

Understanding Ignition Transformers

Ignition transformers are remarkable devices that take an input voltage and current and amplify it to a much higher voltage. For instance, an ignition transformer may take 230v as input and produce an impressive output of 8,000v. They provide “direct spark” ignition for both main burners and pilot burners, the cornerstone of efficient combustion.

Versatile Ignition Solutions Offered by Duomo

As a proud Cofi agent, Duomo offers an extensive range of ignition solutions tailored to meet diverse requirements. Our inventory includes units with various voltages (12v, 24v, 110v, and 230v) and impressive outputs of up to 15,000v. These ignition transformers can be seamlessly integrated into systems equipped with UV sensors or a second electrode for advanced flame detection. Furthermore, they work perfectly in systems where a single electrode rod performs the dual tasks of ignition and flame ionization (uni-rod).

The COFI Range:

TRK Electronic Transformers: Available in both 120-230v, intermittent and permanent operation, with outputs of up to 15kV. These transformers are equipped with single or double poles for Gas or Oil burners.

TRL Power Electronic Transformers: Operating at 12-24v on a permanent basis, these transformers possess outputs of up to 15kV and are designed for seamless integration into combustion systems. Single or double poles are available for Gas or Oil burners.

TRE Inductive Transformers: Suitable for intermittent and permanent operation, these transformers operate at 120-230v and provide outputs of up to 8kV. Choose between single or double poles to meet your specific needs.

TRS Inductive Transformers: Similar to the TRE range, TRS transformers operate at 120-230v, offer intermittent and permanent operation, and provide outputs of up to 8kV. They are also available with single or double poles for improved compatibility.

TRG Inductive Transformers: Large-size conventional transformer, suitable for large-flow and heavy fuel burners, where continuous power and higher voltages or currents are required. The versions of this range are suitable for use in large-size transformers and industrial  high-pressure cleaners.

Troubleshooting Burner Ignition

To ensure optimal performance, it is crucial to address common issues that can hinder the ignition process. If you encounter problems, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Dirty flame scanner or ionization electrode
  • Cracked or broken electrode
  • Incorrect electrode positioning
  • Faulty or damaged HT cap
  • Defective ignition cable
  • Faulty ignition transformer
  • Faulty pilot valve
  • Earthing
